What is a Tricky Tray? (also known as a Chinese Auction)
As per Wikipedia: A Chinese auction is a combination of a raffle and an auction that is typically featured at charity, church festival and numerous other events. Can also be known as penny social, tricky tray or pick-a-prize according to local custom, or to avoid causing offense.
The difference between a raffle and a Chinese auction is that in a raffle with multiple prizes, there is one "hat" from which names are drawn, but in a Chinese auction, each prize (or basket) has its own "hat". This allows ticket buyers to choose which prize to focus on, as opposed to having a first, second, third, etc. prize.
Our Tricky Tray is one of our biggest fund raisers. In prior years, we have bought new uniforms for the marching band, new risers for the Choirs to use, new drums for the drum line, and last year, we bought a new sousaphone for the marching band as well as flags for the color guard. This year we are focusing on enhancing all areas of our music program, not dedicating the tricky tray proceeds to just one project.
How Can I Help?
Solicit from businesses and restaurants that you frequent. Many businesses are more likely to donate to a frequent customer than to a solicitation from off the street. Above is a letter for your use when you solicit that explains who we are, what we do and how a donation helps our organization. Our nonprofit tax id number is included.
So now what? Please take this letter with you to businesses that you frequent such as: Restaurants, hairdresser, manicurist, pet sitter, house cleaner, music lessons, etc. and ask for their help with a gift certificate, item, service or monetary donation. Feel free to branch out into surrounding areas besides Somerville & Branchburg. Please tell us if there is a business you can solicit from so that we do not also approach them.
Donate a basket to be raffled. The basket can be donated by you, your family, friends, or a business. Each Basket should have a theme. Consider combining a vendor donation into a basket that would be worth $100 or more and your donation will be counted as a working fundraiser toward the next music trip for your student. For example, if you got a restaurant certificate donated for $25, you can purchase movie tickets & a bottle of wine to bring the value up to $100. That $100 basket donated by you and the business you solicited from would qualify for your SHS student as one of the working fundraisers for the next fundraising year. To ensure proper credit, please include a filled out donation form, found above, with your donation.
Donate items to be placed into a basket. It can be one single item, a gift certificate (any amount), a donation from a business, or an item you solicited. It can be many items or just one item and we will make the basket.
Join our door to door solicitation team. To sign up, email or call our Tricky Tray chairperson(s).
Donate Cash. If shopping is not your thing, you can make a monetary donation, and we will do the shopping for you!
Baskets, Baskets, Baskets! We are in need of empty baskets, so if you have some leftover baskets we could use them. We do need medium and large baskets.
Purchase tickets. We are asking all Music Program families to purchase/sell at least two admission tickets and attend the Tricky Tray.
If you have any questions, please email or call our Tricky Tray Co-Chairs, Maria Uy at (908-240-6806), Loretta Kimmick at (908) 310–1159, or Daniela Taylor at (908) 642-3757.
Green Ticket Baskets (under $50):
Complete Themed Baskets: Donate a complete basket with a theme such as “Down The Shore”, “Kitchen Gadgets”, “Tea for Two”, “Back to School”, “Day at the Spa”, “Kids Crafts”, “Pet Lovers”, “ScrapBooking”, “Off to College”, “Movie Time”, etc. The sky is the limit—anything you can think of will be great.
