What is a Tricky Tray? (also known as a Chinese Auction)
As per Wikipedia: A Chinese auction is a combination of a raffle and an auction that is typically featured at charity, church festival and numerous other events. Can also be known as penny social, tricky tray or pick-a-prize according to local custom, or to avoid causing offense.
The difference between a raffle and a Chinese auction is that in a raffle with multiple prizes, there is one "hat" from which names are drawn, but in a Chinese auction, each prize (or basket) has its own "hat". This allows ticket buyers to choose which prize to focus on, as opposed to having a first, second, third, etc. prize.
Our Tricky Tray is one of our biggest fund raisers. In prior years, we have bought new uniforms for the marching band, new risers for the Choirs to use, and last year we bought new drums for the drum line. This year we are focusing on enhancing all areas of our music program, not dedicating the tricky tray proceeds to just one project.
Dear Music Program Families:
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Our 7th annual Tricky Tray, will be held on May 2nd, 2015. Hard working SHSMBA members are starting to get busy with online solicitation as well as door to door solicitations.
We are asking every Music Program family to support the event by donating a basket or items that can be used to make a basket. You can also ask businesses and restaurants that you frequent, to donate to the event. Many businesses are more likely to donate to a frequent customer than a solicitation from off the street. If you prefer, monetary donations are welcome and useful! We will do the shopping for you!
Right now, our door to door volunteers consist of only three people which make it a daunting task! Also, we are in competition with lots of other good causes. We will take donations of any amount. However, if you would like to combine a vendor donation into a basket that would be worth $100 or more, your donation will be counted as a working fundraiser toward the next music trip for your student, which is scheduled for 2017. For example, if you got a restaurant certificate donated for $25, you can purchase movie tickets & a bottle of wine to bring the value up to $100. That $100 basket donated by you and the business you solicited from would qualify for your SHS student as one of the working fundraisers for the 2015-2016 fundraising year. When you donate, please include a filled out donation form with your donation, which you can download above.
Above is a letter for your use when you solicit that explains who we are, what we do and how a donation helps our organization. Our nonprofit tax id number is included.
So now what? Please take this letter with you to businesses that you frequent such as: Restaurants, hairdresser, manicurist, pet sitter, house cleaner, music lessons etc. and ask for their help with a gift certificate, item, service or monetary donation. Feel free to branch out into surrounding areas besides Somerville & Branchburg. Please tell us if there is a business you can solicit so that we do not also approach them. We will also be very glad to take your donations of new items as well.
We highly encourage families & friends to attend the Tricky Tray! You won’t be disappointed! Last year we had over 300 prizes including 6 grand prizes! Consider reserving a table of 8 to share with your friends and make it a fun night out! We want to make this a sold out event!
We need empty baskets! If you have empty baskets that we can use for the event, please give us a call and we will arrange to pick them up.
If you have any questions, please email or call our Tricky Tray Co-Chairs, Maria Uy at (908-240-6806) or Beth D'Elia at (908-963-0314). Texts are welcome.
